What we’ll experience

The train

Train crossing the Nine Arch Bridge amid green hills in Ella, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s hill country is made for looking out the window. We’ll travel by rail through mountains, tea country and lush green landscapes where the journey itself is part of the reason for going.

Tea country

Tea is woven into Sri Lanka’s landscape and history. We’ll spend time in the cooler highlands, surrounded by rolling plantations and mountain scenery, and learn more about the tea that has traveled from this island to cups all over the world.

Wildlife

An elephant calf beside an adult, with a herd near the water

We’ll explore Sri Lanka’s national park landscapes on safari, with the possibility of seeing elephants and other wildlife in their natural surroundings. Expect dusty tracks, bumpy roads and a little patience. The encounters unfold on nature’s terms.

Kandy and sacred Sri Lanka

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, illuminated at dusk

We’ll experience Kandy and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism’s most important pilgrimage sites. We’ll enter as guests, dress appropriately, remove our shoes where required and take the opportunity to learn rather than simply photograph.

Food

Sri Lankan hoppers and egg hoppers served with curries and small dishes of accompaniments

Hoppers, fragrant curries, fresh sambols and tropical fruit. There’s plenty to discover around the table.

Markets, people and everyday life

We’ll leave room for market visits, local conversations and the everyday moments that make a place memorable.

The details are coming together

We’re finalizing the route, hotels and local partners. The full itinerary, dates, price and exact inclusions will be shared before booking opens.

Somewhere lovely to come home to

Expect comfortable hotels with character, chosen for cleanliness, location and a welcoming atmosphere. You’ll have your own room; sharing with a friend is available on request.

A little preparation, plenty of support

This is an active trip, with heat, uneven ground, stairs and bumpy safari roads. We’ll publish clear physical requirements before booking and provide guidance on entry requirements, health preparation, insurance and packing before departure.

Activities are optional, with any arrangements for sitting one out explained in advance. We’ll follow local safety guidance around wildlife and respect the customs of the places we visit. Whenever practical, we’ll support women-owned businesses and local guides.

A few questions

Can I come on my own or with a friend?

Absolutely. Both solo travelers and friends are welcome in our small group of women.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

We’ll discuss your needs and any limitations before booking, and work with local partners on reasonable accommodations.

What’s included, and when can I book?

Dates, pricing and booking details are coming soon. We’re planning around accommodations, in-country transportation and group experiences. The final list of inclusions and exclusions, including airfare, will be clear before you book.

The final day-by-day itinerary is still being built.

We’re designing the route around the experiences that matter rather than cramming every famous sight in Sri Lanka into ten days. Expect a thoughtful progression through culture, hill country, wildlife and local life, with enough breathing room that you can actually enjoy where you are.

Once hotels, transportation and local partners are finalized, the complete day-by-day itinerary will appear here.

Where we’ll stay

Probably Abroad is not about roughing it for the sake of proving something.

After a full day, a clean, comfortable and beautiful place to come home to matters. We’ll favor smaller hotels and properties with character when they make sense, and we’ll choose accommodations based on comfort, cleanliness, location, service and the experience they add to the trip.

We’re not chasing generic luxury. We are absolutely chasing a good shower, a comfortable bed and somewhere you’re happy to wake up.

This trip might be for you if…

You want to travel internationally, but you’re tired of waiting for someone else to be ready.

You’re curious about cultures that are different from your own.

You like comfort, but you don’t need everything to feel like home.

You can handle a little heat, dust, traffic, unfamiliar food and the occasional change of plans without deciding the trip is ruined.

You enjoy good conversation but also understand that everyone needs a little space sometimes.

You’re willing to be respectful when local customs ask something different of you.

You don’t need to be fearless. You just need to be willing.

A little outside your comfort zone

Parts of this trip may feel unfamiliar. That’s intentional.

The food is different. The climate can be hot and humid. Safari roads can be dusty and bumpy. Shoes come off at sacred sites. Modest clothing is appropriate in temples. Traffic, sounds, routines and expectations may not work the way they do at home.

We’ll prepare you for what to expect, and we’ll have local expertise with us along the way. You’ll also always be treated like an adult. Activities are optional. No one earns a medal for doing something she doesn’t want to do, and no one gets shamed for sitting something out.

Do it scared. We’ve got you.

Women supporting women

How we spend money while traveling matters.

Whenever it is practical and genuinely beneficial, Probably Abroad seeks out female drivers and guides, women-owned businesses, artisans, fair-trade shops and organizations creating economic opportunity for women.

This isn’t charity tourism, and we aren’t interested in turning someone else’s life into content. It’s simply a decision to be thoughtful about where our travel dollars go and to support women doing good work in their own communities.

Coming alone?

Good.

You can certainly travel with a friend, but Probably Abroad exists because too many women have places they want to go and no one available to go with them.

You do not need to recruit a travel partner before you can have an adventure. Show up on your own. Everyone else is showing up for the same trip.

By the time we’re arguing about whose turn it is to get the window seat, we’ll have figured out the rest.

What’s included

We’re still finalizing local partners, hotels and transportation, so the official inclusions will be published with the final itinerary and price.

The trip is being designed to include the core in-country transportation, accommodations and planned group experiences that make up the Probably Abroad itinerary. We’ll spell out exactly what is and isn’t included before anyone is asked to book.

The practical stuff

International travel requires preparation. Before departure, travelers will receive detailed guidance covering entry requirements, recommended health preparation, travel insurance, money, clothing, packing, temple etiquette, food and water precautions, transportation and the realities of traveling in wildlife areas.

Some parts of the trip will involve uneven ground, heat, stairs, getting in and out of vehicles and longer periods of driving. We’ll publish clear physical expectations before booking so you can decide whether the trip is a good fit for you.

Safety instructions in wildlife areas are not optional. We’ll follow local guidance, including avoiding independent walking at dawn or dusk in areas where wild elephants may be present.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring a friend?

No. That’s rather the point.

What age group is this for?

There’s no magic age. What matters is that you’re curious, independent and physically able to keep up with the demands of this particular trip. We’ll spell those expectations out clearly before you apply so you can decide whether Sri Lanka sounds like your kind of fun.

Do I have to participate in every activity?

No. We’ll tell you what’s planned and what you need to know, and you can decide what’s right for you. When skipping an activity requires special logistical arrangements for safety, we’ll make those expectations clear.

Do I need to be extremely fit?

No, but this is an active international trip rather than a resort vacation. Final physical requirements will be published with the itinerary.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

We’ll collect dietary information before travel and work with our local partners on reasonable accommodations. Specific limitations will be discussed before booking.

Will I have time to myself?

Yes. Small-group travel does not mean spending every waking minute together.

Is airfare included?

Final inclusions are still being determined. We’ll make this completely clear when pricing is released.

When can I book?

Dates, pricing and booking details are coming soon.

Ready to go somewhere?

Sri Lanka is our first adventure, and we’re keeping the group intentionally small.

Dates, pricing and full booking details are coming soon.

Come solo or bring a friend. Let’s make some memories.
